Gallery 4D

In general, a fourth dimension is said to be ‘Time’. Normally, to say where an object is, its position in space is defined by 3 dimensions - its distance in X, Y, and Z axes from a given point. Further precision could be added by not only asking where the object is, but also when it was there. My house is where it is at the moment, but it was not there 1000 years ago.

This is fascinating, but is nothing to do with my tapestry work. In my 4D tapestries, I started by trying to invoke the collision, or passage, of objects in two different spatial systems. The idea was to have the objects occupying the same space, depicted in two different perspectives, and different light sources, with the shared space stitched in a different colour.

Similar ideas here, but I wanted an altogether cleaner and sharper result, so no more poorly defined space-sharing colour. The red blocks in Tapestry 44 are clearly on a different trajectory, just obliviously cutting through the world of turquoise cubes as if it didn’t exist. You might notice, however, that although the perspectives and light sources are different, the outline footprints of red and turquoise blocks are identical. This can be seen more clearly with the fourth red cube from top left, compared with its adjacent turquoise blocks. Tapestry 45 is a slight departure from the collision idea, using a stripe to emphasise the shape and perspectives of the two blocks.
